French Adverbs: Formation and Usage
Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, adding information about manner, time, place, and degree. French adverbs follow specific formation rules.
Adverb Formation
Most French adverbs are formed by adding -ment to feminine adjective forms: rapide → rapidement, facile → facilement. Adjectives ending in -ant or -ent form adverbs in -amment or -emment: brillant → brillamment.
Placement in Sentences
Adverbs generally follow conjugated verbs: Elle parle bien. With compound tenses, adverbs usually come between auxiliary and past participle: Elle a bien parlé. Negative adverbs surround the verb: Je ne parle pas.
Common Adverbs
Bien (well), mal (badly), beaucoup (much), peu (little), toujours (always), souvent (often), parfois (sometimes), maintenant (now), demain (tomorrow), aujourd'hui (today) are essential everyday adverbs.
